If you’re opting for outdoor runs this winter, there’s a pretty good chance you will encounter below freezing temperatures. lizzos leather corset shorts thigh high boots flute rumors jackboots calvin klein knee boot 20 w dhw hw0hw00607 ck black bax might seem like a more inviting option.

Fear not! Whether you’re training for a spring half-marathon or just want to get in a dose of Vitamin D, there are simple ways to make winter running more tolerable, and might I say, even enjoyable. If you layer up properly in warm, sweat-wicking gear, you can ensure that you are properly prepared for even the coldest of temperatures.

The key is protecting your head (ears, too.) The right hat, headband, or beanie will keep you warm and ward off any elements—while letting heat escape from your head—so you can get outdoors and log some miles without a moment’s hesitation.

The Best Winter Running Hats

The Expert (Stephanie Hoppe): I’m a warm weather person, so when I moved from Phoenix to Chicago, I knew my transition to winter running would be a challenge. To adjust to a windchill “feels like temperature” of -40 and gusts of 45 mph, I invested in all the appropriate winter running gear, which of course included hats.

I’ve been running now for 20 years and have tested many winter running hats, headbands, and balaclavas along the way. I have found options that work, like the Smartwool 250 Cuffed Beanie, and those that did not. Right now, I’m preparing for a trip to Antarctica where I fully intend to sneak in a run or two, but I’ll need the best of the best gear to do so.

What to Consider in a Winter Running Hat

There are plenty of styles to keep your noggin warm. Beanies ensure your entire head stays toasty while still letting out heat. A cap typically doesn’t cover the ears—something to keep in mind if you want to protect that part of your body, too. Balaclavas cover your entire head and most of your face and neck, so they’re ideal on colder and more blustery days. For those warmer winter days, opt for a compromise with a headband. It will leave the top of your head exposed so heat can escape, but will keep your ears covered.

Running hats can range from under $5 to upwards of $50. As a rule of thumb, hats made with merino wool will be more expensive than those with synthetic fibers. Besides pricing and materials used, you’ll want to factor in sizing and fit.

Many options recommended here are OSFM (one size fits most), but others are traditional with S/M and L/XL, and some hats are even gender specific.

The weather conditions in which you will be running will also help you choose what type of hat is best. Temperature range and time of day will help you decide what other features, like ventilation and reflectivity, might also be useful.

Materials

Many hats are made of moisture-wicking fabric (typically merino, polyester, or nylon— or a combination of all three), to keep you dry and warm. Merino wool is lightweight, soft and naturally insulating, moisture-wicking, and odor resistant. It’s typically more expensive than synthetic. Because it’s a natural fiber, it can be worn comfortably in all winter running temperatures, but I opt for this material for colder and longer runs.

Polyester is also a popular material for hats. This fabric is soft and lightweight, and wicks moisture. Use this type of hat for running in all temperatures. A big perk is this material’s low maintenance. It’s easy to care for and clean.

Nylon is also moisture-wicking and lightweight, but offers more elasticity than polyester for a more custom fit. Hats with this fabric will be snug and offer increased wind protection.

Blended fabrics offer the best of all worlds since they combine the comfort and natural wicking capabilities of wool with the durability and elasticity of synthetic fibers. If you plan to run in rain or snow, consider a water-repellent fabric like Gore-Tex.

Fit

Many hats, caps and balaclavas use one size fits most (OSFM). If you want a more tailored fit, there are plenty of caps that are gender-specific and traditional sizes. Because sizing can vary from brand to brand, it’s best to check the website for measurement ranges to guide you in selecting the proper fit.

Recommended Temp Range

If you live somewhere where temperatures consistently dip into the teens, a balaclava is an appropriate choice. While warmer temperatures (think anything in the 30–40-degree range) may warrant a headband. For anything in between, try a cap. Wind can make temperatures feel cooler and the sun can heat things up. I tend to underdress in the winter since I heat up—and overheat—quickly.

Extras

Since shorter winter days can mean runs in the dark, consider a winter hat or cap that includes reflective details. If you know you are prone to sweating a lot, look for options with mesh panels and anti-bacterial and odor fighting properties.

How We Selected Winter Running Hats

To make my selections, I relied on my own experience and years of running in cold weather. I enlisted the help of my running friends to understand what caps did and didn’t work for them—and why. I researched various options online and read customer reviews. I also incorporated the prior research and recommendations of writer Gabrielle Hondorp.

Pros
  • Wicks sweat well
  • Available in bright colors
Cons
  • Too tight for larger heads

This best-selling lightweight and affordable beanie is made from a poly-spandex blend that stretches over your head, sits close on your ears, and effectively wicks away sweat. Thin enough to fit under a ski helmet or bike helmet, or serve as a liner underneath a chunky, knit cap, it will keep you warm at temps as low as 10 degrees.

Runners prone to overheating will appreciate being able to roll it up and stuff it in their pocket. The beanie is also available in bright orange and neon yellow for increased visibility during winter’s limited-daylight days or in snow.

      • Small bill for sunny days
      • On Cloud Running sneakers
      Cons
      • One-size-fits-all might not, in fact, fit all

Most winter hats leave my ponytail with nowhere to go. This fleece cap has a little hole in the back through which it can escape so all my hair stays out of sight and out of mind. It’s an ideal pick for sunny, below-freezing days, as the bill is big enough to protect your eyes, and the drop-down ear flap is cozy against your ears and neck.

It’s also versatile—the ponytail slit is almost unnoticeable if you’re not using it, and on warmer days, you can tuck the ear cover back into the cap. The all-over fleecy fabric is soft, comfortable, and warm, but it doesn’t provide much rain protection for those who run in wetter climates. Also be warned that the hat stretches to fit in one-size-fits-most fashion, so runners with bigger heads might find it too tight.

      250 Cuffed Beanie

      Cons
      • Might be too thin for some, especially those who used the previous version of this hat

This go-to head warmer is for the brave soul who runs in all conditions, including snow, sleet, and ice. Here’s why: Smartwool’s 100-percent merino is double-locked for extra warmth, but it’s also soft, it breathes, it wicks moisture, and it resists odors that some man-made materials never shake, even after repeated washing.

Roll the cuff up for a stylish touch or pull it down low over your ears on the frostiest days.

      Howling Wind Fleece Cap
      Pros
      • Sizing allows for tailored fit to your head size
      Cons
      • Too small for some consumers’ heads

Here is a great option if you’re looking for full coverage—ears, head, and neck— with added warmth. The flat bill will shield you from any potential precipitation, while breathable fleece on the sides and wrap-around ear flaps block wind.

This moisture-wicking hat will keep you warm, but without you overheating. Bonus points for the cool retro style.

      Oasis Balaclava
      Pros
      • Lightweight
      • Warm
      • Comfy
      Cons
      • May lose its shape over time

If you plan on running in frigid temperatures, go for an all-encompassing style like this one that checks all the boxes. The Icebreaker Oasis Balaclava protects your head, face, and ears from winter chill. It’s soft and comfortable with flatlock seams to prevent chafing, and since it’s made from moisture-wicking midweight merino wool, you won't get overly damp—plus it’s machine washable.

A typical concern with balaclavas is that your breath may cause the material around your mouth to get wet—and even freeze (it’s happened to me on numerous occasions,). That is not the case with this option thanks to a small ventilation area that allows your breath to escape, but no cold air to enter.

This Smartwool merino headband has an interlocking knit construction, which ensures optimal comfort, breathability, and thermoregulation. And, it’s reversible so you get two different looks for the price of one.

With merino wool, you’ll stay cozy on your cold runs without incurring an itchy scalp or overheating. The just-snug-enough fit prevents the headband from sliding off without inducing a pressure headache.

It’s so small and lightweight that you can tuck it into a pocket if you get too warm. But on the coldest of days, consider pairing this with a neck gaiter (like this one, also from Smartwool) to give more coverage.

When you’re going a long distance, warmth and comfort are critical. The Salomon Winter Training Beanie offers AdvancedSkin Shield technology to protect you from wind and snow with an integrated sweatband to keep you toasty and dry.

What impressed me is this hat’s built-in windproof panels that protect your forehead from the wind. When you are logging lots of miles, it’s also important to remember your shades—the sun still shines in the wintertime. This beanie takes that into consideration, too, including slots so your sunglasses don’t shift around.

Look for a hat that covers your ears and stays securely on without squeezing your forehead. Many hats are one-size-fits-all, but you will also see S/M and L/XL. Some hats are also gender specific. Test the fit indoors or on a shorter run before taking any options out for a longer run or workout.

Many running hats can simply be thrown in the washing machine with your other running clothes and gear, but confirm care instructions of your specific hat before you do anything. If machine washing, consider using a delicate cycle and air drying to extend the life of your hat.

It’s also beneficial to have a couple of options; I often rotate between a few different hats depending on the conditions.

Along with keeping your head warm, the next most important thing to remember is your hands. Running gloves or mittens are a must for blustery days. I prefer mittens on the coldest days because… body heat! Neck gaiters and merino wool socks are my other go-to’s for winter runs.
