I wish I could take ownership of the Adrenaline-self-driving-car quip, but credit is due to shoe tester Brian F. “This shoe seems to steer your running and protect you from veering off into a lazy or off-kilter stride,” he said.

With its 20th iteration, Brooks’s support all-star has retained its beloved responsive and cushioned ride, even after undergoing a “holistic” makeover. Like a steady hand guiding a child on a bicycle, the guide rail system, introduced with the womens brooks greenlight essential tight, stabilizes your run without over-correction or uncomfortable pressure below your arch.

Some runners with a preference for “lighter, faster” shoes said the Adrenaline was too heavy to dial-in speed into their workouts.

“I do not get the impression that this is a shoe for fast efforts and PRs,” said a tester. “[However,] the stability appears to be helping me avoid some discomfort from a previous injury that my other shoes did not prevent.”

Even though you’re still too young to legally drink, Adrenaline GTS 20, colecci us to toast your status as a Brooks mainstay. You are proof that change can be good, and that it’s possible for favorite traits—a comfortable fit and smooth ride—to stay intact.

Improved Upper

The 20 is slightly lighter than its predecessor (the men’s womens brooks greenlight essential tight was 11.1 ounces; women’s, 9.2 ounces). The weight was shaved off by omitting the stylistic add-ons that decorated the 19’s engineered mesh. A soft padded heel collar resulted in no rubbing, and toes didn’t become cramped or blistered.

“My heel fit snug into the back, and my forefoot had some room to move but not too much,” said a tester. “I mostly ran 5- to 8-milers in the heat, so my foot swelled up pretty quickly, but I didn’t feel much discomfort at all.”

Similar in Spirit

Best Brooks road running shoes support version of Brooks’s other popular shoe, the Ghost. Like its fraternal twin, the Adrenaline has a major of BioMoGo DNA and DNA Loft in its midsole for plush cushioning and energy return. It’s a reliable shoe for both short and long runs; the guide rail system provides support when your gait becomes sloppy due to inevitable fatigue when you’re out beyond the hour.

Test Impressions

The sides of my heel were raw from other shoes in the testing cycle; a minor discomfort that comes with the job, I guess. I was nervous switching to the Adrenaline, expecting my wounds to smart on a mid-distance run. But the shoe is quite comfy, and my blisters weren’t exacerbated during my run. Or the run after that. Or the run after that.

The shoe has impressive rebound and a dependable tread on wet pavement (no slippage or slide-age, thanks). My 20th wasn’t remarkable, but fortunately, the same can’t be said for the Adrenaline. May you continue to age well into your 30th.

Wear Tester Feedback

“This shoe was awesome! Compared to other pairs of Adrenalines I have had, this supplied the lightest ride, softest landing, and softest midsole. It is not as stiff as my Adrenaline 18s and the ride was more fluid. The mesh system kept my foot cool while still providing support. The lacing and tongue did not have any issue. Extremely flexible [and] good Bolsa in all this rain we have had.”
