The glorious Island of Hawaii hosted the 35th anniversary event of triathlon's most prestigious race, the GoPro IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona. Belgium's Frederick Van Lierde was crowned champion marking the end of a six-year Australian winning streak in the men's event. However it was the Australian Miranda Carfrae who took the title in the women's.

Sunday proved to be an extremely competitive field of athletes and conditions were in their favour with record-low temperatures and no wind to unsettle them on the bike.

Talking at the finish line, event winner Van Lierde proved that consistancy was key saying, "I tried to be smart, and it worked out". He is the second Belgian to win this event, his coach Luc Van Lierde — no relation — took the title twice. "After last year I believed I could do it," he continues, "I worked hard this year — I've never worked this hard. I've never had such a feeling. It's the best I could have hoped for."

A victorious Carfrae hit the finish line two minutes ahead of Chrissie Wellington's world record of 8:54:02, thus equalling a new course record, as well as the third-fastest overall run split of the day: 2:50:38. On her win Carfrae said, "I'm getting married in two months — I think I'll be able to cover the wedding bill." She continued but crediting her victory to longtime coach Siri Lindley, "I just had one of those days where you don't hurt — I didn't know I had a performance like that in me."
