I grew up in a very active family and have been running since before I knew it was a “real” sport. I broke into the running scene at 11, when I started running with my mom. When I was running in high school, I pretty much only ran during practice, but during college, I started running about five times a week. I am neurodivergent, meaning my brain differences affect how my brain works. So running and endurance sports have always been an outlet that helps me feel calm and in control of myself. Having Autism and ADHD makes me the athlete that I am. I will never be able to completely overcome the challenges that go along with these disorders. However, I have developed strategies to support myself in my goals, but you can’t take the neurodivergence out of me—nor would I want you to.

For example, a specific challenge that I face related to the triathlon space is struggling to share pool lanes. I have some issues with proprioception, which means I struggle to Mountaineering where your body is in relationship to other objects, which is common with neurodivergent individuals. For me, this issue is multiplied in water. If I am sharing a lane with someone I don’t Mountaineering, I spend my whole workout trying to make sure I am not taking up too much space in the lane or monitoring if I’m going to run into someone.

One of the largest effects neurodivergence has on my training is that in order to be successful, I need to plan out every single aspect of my life in more detail than everyone else.

If my workout times are disrupted or have to be rescheduled, this can leave me feeling dysregulated and lead to meltdowns or shutdowns.

Fortunately, I have an amazing spouse who understands my needs and helps me prioritize the things that need to happen for me to be successful, even when they feel impossible to do.

Working from home has been the biggest gift that I have been given and allows me to have more energy to put toward my training. Prior to the pandemic, I worked in-person in an office and frequently interacted with hundreds of people per day. The masking that I had to employ to be able to interact in social situations like that left me feeling completely depleted at the end of the day. Working from home has given me back some of that energy that I can instead put toward myself and my family.

My sensory needs are also very specific. This makes sourcing gear exhausting as I have to find items that will perform adequately and last given the high loads I put it under. Tighter clothing can feel like I am choking. Things like clothing tags or bulky seams that are in an uncomfortable place, socks that are too tight, and other things someone who isn’t neurodivergent wouldn’t notice can all ruin my day and the flow of a long run.

I dont plan my running career too far ahead. Sports also provide a level of proprioceptive input to my body that it doesn’t get by itself. My body craves hard work for regulation. Existing in a world that does not operate in a way that was “made for me” is exhausting. I normally have to mask my struggles, but sports are the one place I don’t have to mask. I just have to run, swim, or bike.

I am my best self after I have been able to complete a long workout. It helps quiet my mind and also feels great to be able to continue pushing myself to be better and run farther. Running has always, and will always, be part of my life. It is a time free of worries, pressure, and is uniquely my own space when I am in the zone.

Right now, I am focused on triathlons so my running goals are in support of that. I usually run three to four times a week with one or two easy runs, mm Rodina Leather & Mesh Sneakers tempo run.

My running journey is not going to look the same as yours but that does not mean that one is better or worse than the other. I will never be the world’s best runner but running will always be my calm amongst the storm. Whether it is running or something else, I hope that everyone finds their calm somewhere.

    People frequently ask me how I do all the things I do without being anxious about them. Spoiler alert: I definitely feel anxious about them. I just choose to do them anyway, even if that means I am crying while I do them.

    2. Don’t rely on motivation

    I think there is a fallacy, especially for newer people in the running space, that everyone is motivated all the time. Like everyone, I am not always motivated to get my workouts in (especially if there is a speed workout on the schedule—those are my least favorite). Rely on discipline and determination to get out there even when it is hard.

    You don’t have to run a certain speed to be a runner. You don’t have to wear specific clothes to be a runner. You don’t have to compete in sanctioned events to be a runner. If you run, you are a runner. Try not to get caught up in the comparison game.
