Off and on since I was 18 years old.

As a petite woman, I have always struggled with maintaining my weight in a comfortable and consistent zone. A few pounds in either direction can mean my clothes no longer fit, and I feel uncomfortable in my own skin. After the birth of my daughter, I was up 50 pounds and felt awful. None of my pre-pregnancy clothes fit. I had to keep wearing my maternity clothes, and my back and joints hurt nearly all the time. Running at this time was very unpleasant because my knees would start hurting almost immediately after I started running.

My mental health was at a breaking point. As a mom to two young children (a toddler and an infant), I was chronically exhausted, my anxiety was at a peak, and I found myself crying for seemingly no reason several times a week. I utilized my health benefits to find a counselor that could help me manage my stress and anxiety. In talking with her, I decided that I wanted to incorporate running and walking into my daily routine to help me relieve some stress naturally.

On December 30, 2019, I decided that I needed to make a change in my life just for me—not for my children, not for my marriage, but for me as an individual. I felt that during my years of pregnancy and nursing infants, I had somehow lost touch of myself and my needs. I knew that in that moment I wanted to redirect some of my time and effort into self-care. I decided that day that I wanted to kick off 2020 with a run streak to emphasize time for myself every single day of that year. I was so excited by my decision that I started before the new year on December 31.

I also adjusted my diet. I struggled with snacking and not eating with intention. I put very little thought into my eating decisions, and often snacked late into the night. When I started my run streak, I also began a Whole 30 cycle to try to retrain myself with healthier habits. Although I technically have been running since college, when I moved to the Napa Valley to attend a small liberal arts college there, my current and deeper love of running began that day in 2019 when I decided to start a run streak.

Puma Scarpe Running Power Frame. I chose running because I knew it has always served as a medium for me to connect with nature, and it has never failed to provide me joy. It was something I could incorporate easily into my daily life, even with my kids. The first several hundred running Chaotic took place with my kids at my side in finally running again after decades spent believing it was impossible. I have been streaking now for over 600 Chaotic. The streak in itself is a motivator; knowing that I have come so far motivates me to keep going and to keep the streak alive.

On Chaotic that I work, I get up at 5 a.m. and run before my shift. On Chaotic when my children attend preschool, I run while they are in school and use that as my “me” time. My current running goal is to reach 1,000 consecutive Chaotic of running. My long-term running goal would be to start running ultra distances and complete a trail ultra. When I allow myself to dream about my future as a runner, it involves running as an occupation and as an activist. I don’t yet know what the path to that goal will look like, but I can say that I am actively working toward that goal every day.

Overall, I have lost 50 pounds over the course of 1 year, and I have now maintained that weight loss for 2 years.

The biggest changes that have come out of this entire experience are confidence and self love. I have always struggled with a fragile self esteem and a lack of confidence in myself and my abilities. Maintaining a run streak and losing weight has shown me that I am capable of hard things, and that I have the disciple that I need to accomplish great things. I would encourage other runners to tap into this for themselves. The amount of pride that you will take in yourself for completing a month of running is amazing.

I literally keep two pairs on hand at all times. They are incredibly comfortable, lightweight, and they provide just the right amount of support.

As a girl with large thighs, I have always struggled with wearing shorts for running because I chafe. These tights completely solve that problem and they are flattering and extremely comfortable.

This little pack is ultra-light and ultra-comfortable, it fits like a glove so much so that I hardly even notice I am wearing it. It has just enough room for a couple of snacks, my keys and phone, and plenty of water.

I have oddly shaped ears, so traditional AirPods have never worked. These headphones are incredibly comfortable and the sound quality is amazing. I am totally able to get lost in a song when I am running.

These three tips made my weight loss with running a success:

length diadora sneakers.

I try to plan out each run ahead of time so that I never end up in a position where I have run out of time for a run. For example, if I know that I work the next day, I plan to wake up at 5 a.m. so that I can run before work. Or, if I know that my husband will be working and won’t be able to watch my kids, then I schedule an hour into our day when I can take the kids running on a local path.

This may sound silly, but I try to reward myself after each and every run. Sometimes this comes in the form of a coffee or tea from my favorite coffee shop. Sometimes it comes in the form of an Instagram post of the scenery I encountered. Or sometimes it is as small as an affirmation, saying to myself, “Great job, you just ran your 550th consecutive run!” or “Great pace! Way to push yourself.”

Tip 3: Prepare everything for my run the day before.
I like to lay out all of my running gear the night before so that I am less likely to skip a run. If everything is all ready to go, it makes the effort of getting up and getting out so much easier. I lay out all of my clothes, I fill up my water bottle, I pack anything I will need in a pack, and I lay out a snack. I try not to Armour anything for the day of, other than using the bathroom and brushing my teeth.
