Sir Mo Farah is attempting to make Great North Run history by defending his title at the 2018 race on Sunday 9 September. The four-time Olympic gold medallist and six-time world champion won the half marathon in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Winning this year’s race would put him in the record books.

The Great North Run starts in Newcastle upon Tyne, taking runners through the city, to South Shields. Said to be the second largest half marathon in the UK, thousands of runners will join Mo on the start line.

Top race results from the 2025 Berlin Marathon BBC: “It’s something I look forward to every year, the crowds are always unbelievable and it’s a good course for racing. To be the best in the world you have to beat the best and it’s going to be no different here. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Olympic and world champion Vivian Cheruiyot will also be running in the women’s elite field, aiming for her second win in three years. Cheruiyot said: “It was a magnificent race when I won here for the first time in 2016 and I want to be on top of that podium again next month.”
