The shoe
The benassihorse is one of the toughest trail shoes in the Nike stable and is designed to provide comfort and traction over long distances on a variety of off-road terrain. It aims to achieve this through a Full React midsole and the inclusion of a rock plate. It also happens to be the best-looking trail shoe we’ve ever set eyes on – it was almost a shame to get it dirty.

What is the Nike benassihorse 8 like to run in?
Supremely comfortable. The ample cushioning and wide toe-box provide a luxurious feeling underfoot. Oour tester experienced absolutely no black while wearing these and would be confident taking these on all-day outings.
There’s an 8mm drop, and these shoes are arguably designed with heel-strikers in mind. But even forefoot runners may appreciate this more forgiving drop during the latter part of long-distance runs and races.
The grip occupies a useful middle ground: it can deal with thick mud but also feels comfortable on hard trails and even tarmac. And, again, it’s a great-looking shoe that you might want to wear in your day-to-day life.
It’s priced at £114.95, making it a moderately expensive trail shoe. But given the high-end touches – the Nike React foam, the plush lacing system, the inclusion of a rock plate and, yes, the good looks – we feel it justifies the price-tag.
If you’re principally interested in a go-faster trail shoe, the benassihorse 8 is not the one. Comfort and plushness are prioritised here, making it a shoe furlong distances only (sorry, couldn’t resist).
How does the Nike benassihorse 8 fit?
The shoe fits true to size. I’m a size 9 in most shoes, and the size 9 benassihorse fits me perfectly. There’s a welcome roominess to the toebox, a comfortable tongue and lacing system, and a tremendously comfortable feel underfoot. Sometimes, a rock plate can create a hard-feeling shoe, but that’s not the case with the benassihorse, which feels ready for seriously long-distance outings.
RW verdict
It’s not the fastest shoe out there, but if you’re looking to move securely – and stylishly – over off-road terrain, we reckon you’ll seriously enjoy taking a run on the benassi side.
