Spring has officially sprung which means it's a good time to pack away those running leggings and swap in a pair of breathable running shorts. But while any opportunity to showcase your fabulous runner's pins should be jumped at, wearing short-shorts also increases your risk of thigh chafe. Fortunately, cycling-style running shorts are on hand for runners looking for chafe-free comfort and our team has put a bunch through their paces over the past six months to bring you our curated pick of the best.

Best women's cycling-style running shorts in 2025

In a hurry? Here are the best women's running cycling shorts at a glance. Keep scrolling for the full list.

Choosing the best cycling-style running shorts

Also known as spandex or compression shorts, cycling-style shorts are slightly longer, form-fitting bottoms. Similar to leggings (but for those who run hot or the warmer months) they are well suited to women who run, as they minimise chafing by preventing your thighs from rubbing as you sweat.

They often come with a high-waist to keep your middle comfortable too. And if you're at all concerned about wearing tight lycra, don't be. Form-fitting spandex is surprisingly flattering and most styles now come with perfectly positioned seams to make you look (and feel) streamlined.

Confusingly, they are often still called cycling shorts (as bike fans got their first) but the shorts on our list are not padded, so they won't offer much protection if you're planning on wearing them on your bike, but they will feel great when you run.

Here are a couple of other things to consider:

• Find your fit: While cycling-style shorts are revelatory for women who run, not all bottoms are created equal. Some spandex shorts still ride up, feel too compressive, or just lack the power to stay put, so look for shorts that cater to your specific needs.

• Leg length: Like leggings, cycle-style shorts are designed to sit tight against your skin. The key is to select the right leg length – the distance between your crotch and the lowest part of your leg. Too short and you might feel like you're running in pants, too long and they risk sagging or riding up.

• Pocket power: Planning to hit the road in just shorts and a vest? Look for bottoms with enough pockets to store all your essentials. Most now come with secret compartments in the waistband, while some also have drop-pockets on the thigh.

• Middle ground: Prefer to tuck it all in or feel the breeze on your midriff? Look for low, mid or high-rise waistbands depending on what you prefer.

Super light and breathable

lululemon Swift Speed High-Rise Shorts

lululemon Swift Speed High-Rise Shorts

Pros

  • Two side pockets
  • Don't ride up

Cons

  • On the pricer side

We're the first to admit when something fails to hit the mark at RW and unfortunately that was the case for lululemon's Fast and Free High-Rise shorts which, despite having silicone grips on the hems, kept riding up on the run. Thankfully, we've since tested these new Swift Speed shorts instead, and it's a different story entirely.

Made from a more supportive fabric than the Fast and Free's Nulux, they don't ride up at all, Best for anti-chafing. And did we mention the pockets? There are three. Two large drop in pockets on the thighs (ideal for gels) and a large zip pocket on the waistband so you can store your phone securely. A truly brilliant pair of running shorts we hope won't be discontinued!

Zero Gravity 9" Cycling Shorts

Pros

  • 9 inch length for great coverage
  • They stayed firmly put even with a

Cons

  • Not the cheapest option

Our absolute favourite thing about these shorts is the super deep pockets on each leg — there's space to carry everything, including a large smartphone, without fear that it will fall out. And the zipped pocket on the back is the perfect size for a spare gel.

At 9 inches they're reassuringly long so there's absolutely no chance of chafing, while the pull cord on the waist ensures they stay in place. Made from silky smooth Italian fabric, they're incredibly lightweight and comfortable with decent compression — supportive rather than restrictive, allowing you full range of motion though those post-run stretches.

Also available in a 6 inch length.

New Balance Sleek Pocket High Rise Short 6"

Sleek Pocket High Rise Short 6"

Pros

  • Silicone grips keep the shorts in place
  • Silicone leg grips

Cons

  • are worthy of mention

If you were a fan of New Balances’s now-discontinued Impact Run Shorts, we have good news: the brand has released these Sleek Pocket Shorts and they’re just as good, if not better. Thanks to well-placed panels and silicone grips on the hem, they're tight fitting and don’t budge on the move, meaning you don’t have to worry about dreaded thigh chafe.

NB has ditched the back storage tunnel from the Impact Shorts, but this new design boasts two large side pockets for your phone/keys/fuel. And best of all, the shorts adhere to New Balance’s new green leaf standard, so at least 70% of the materials used come with eco-credentials.

Go Women's Firm-Support High-Waisted Biker Shorts with Pockets

Pros

  • Super supportive
  • Multiple pockets, including a zipped compartment

Cons

  • Best Sweaty Betty shorts

These cycling-style shorts from Nike have a zipped-up feel and generous high waist, so they’re ideal if you’re looking for a bit more support around the middle. You can also cinch the waist in with the hidden drawcord, so there’s absolutely no way they’re slipping down during a race or intense speed session.

They’re also incredibly comfortable – made from recycled nylon, the material is gorgeously soft, they don’t ride up and there’s no seam at the bottom, so no circulation issues for those with muscular thighs. And there are pockets for days – the dream. However, it is worth noting that some of our testers found sweat was rather visible in the in lighter colourways.

Decathlon KIPRUN Women's Running Cycling Shorts

Women's Running Cycling Shorts

Pros

  • Pockets built into the waistband for a smooth silhouette
  • Soft and comfortable

Cons

  • Don't expect any fancy features at this price

Another day, another brilliant budget option from Decathlon. These cycling style shorts hug your figure for a flattering fit and the pockets are cleverly housed in the waistband to minimise distractions.

Speaking of — there are two pockets, one on the side of the waistband that's ideal for a key or credit card, and one on the back that will hold smartphone or gel.

While not the most technical of the shorts we've tested, we found these didn't ride up much and we didn't have to adjust the waistband either — which for the price is pretty impressive.

Also available in black.

Gymshark Adapt Safari Tight Shorts

Adapt Safari Tight Shorts

Pros

  • No central seam at the front
  • Flattering and versatile — ideal for cross-training

Cons

  • No pockets

Animal print is a neutral, and we won't hear anything to the contrary. These snakeskin-inspired cycling shorts have a wide ribbed waistband, bum-sculpting ruching and are gloriously stretchy, clinging like a second skin. The print is arranged in a subtle panelling effect, so they incredibly flattering but with no seams to dig in and distract as you smash that PB. Zero pockets adds to the fuss-free approach, plus there's no front middle seam so no digging in around the crotch.

As a result they're unsurprisingly super comfy, plus they're reassuringly thick without being hot (yes, they passed the squat-test) and they're as at home pounding pavements as they are cross-training in the gym — we even used them for yoga. Plus they're easy to style, pairing well with plain running tops (we like this loose tank from the same brand) thanks to the funky print.

They don't have pockets, so you will need to wear a running belt and swap in a pair of breathable. Available in four shades.
