Spring is the perfect time to kick off your Health - Injuries. With winter in the distance and temperatures becoming more ideal, the motivation is perhaps a little easier to convince yourself to register for a 13.1.

Although the spring and autumn months may be more popular for half marathon runners, there are still plenty of races held every summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Some, run in the north, still boast chilly temps, while others in the west steer clear of packed weekends in October and April when they have temperate weather all year round. And then, there’s just races dropped into the middle of summer solely to test the endurance of the field.

Whether you are looking for a race to fit into your summer break, something close to home in the great white north, or just a sweaty challenge, we’ve got the race for you. So check out these 15 incredible half marathons scheduled for summer 2024!

Grab a partner and start summer off right by running the Vermont City Half Marathon Relay on the banks of Lake Champlain. It’s hard to find a better organized small town race than this one in northern Vermont. Not only is the course, which winds its way through Burlington’s quaint downtown including several trips down the famous Church Street, one of the best in New England, but the amenities are incredible. What other race is giving out Ben & Jerry’s ice cream at the finish line? The crowd support from the town is enthusiastic, and the finish includes gorgeous lake views.

Despite what you may have seen in the Coen Brothers’s classic film, Fargo, this city is a lot more than snow, nasally accents, and wood chippers. In the summer, North Dakota is actually quite gorgeous with weather that doesn’t make you feel like you’re Lawrence of Arabia. Fargo’s half is a consistently popular summer race that takes advantage of the cooler climate. The course will give you a nice tour of the city and a PR is likely on this very flat route. Then afterward you can go rummaging around on the side of a highway for a briefcase full of cash.

The Rock ’n’ Roll Running Series has been all about making marathon running fun since it launched in 1998 in San Diego. Now you can run their original half every summer in San Diego’s temperate climate. The marathon and half begin together before the half splits off around mile eight to give the half marathoners an extended run through the city’s famed Balboa Park on its race to the finish. With a downhill The Best Summer Running Gear.

        Williamson, West Virginia

The Hatfield McCoy Half Marathon is unique in that it gives runners the option of two different halves to run. Where most race weekends basically chop off either the beginning or end of their marathon and call that the half, this West Virginia/Kentucky border crossing race decided to give half runners the ability to basically run the full marathon course in two separate chunks. If you’d prefer a hilly trek along the marathon’s first half you can sign up for the Blackberry Mountain Half Marathon, but if you’d like to opt for a slightly less hilly option, you can run the River Road Half Marathon instead. Either way you’ll be assigned either a Hatfield or McCoy bib and run for the honor of your clan.

        5. Yellowstone Half Marathon

Their Yellowstone Half is a forested mountain climb that will provide you with some incredible views on your way to the finish. Plus, you can easily tie this half into a trip to Yellowstone itself. The Grandma’s Marathon has become a favorite in recent years of runners trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Given it’s speedy flat course and mid-summer date (the Boston qualifying cut off is September 1), it’s often one of the last marathons you can run to earn your spot. Whether you’re tagging along with a BQ-seeking friend or just want an excuse to explore lake country in northern Minnesota, this Grandma’s-adjacent half marathon is a lovely way to spend a summer morning. This race sells out quickly (it is sold out for 2024), so register early for 2025 slots if you want in on the fun.

If there’s one place you can count on to be cool even in the middle of summer it is certainly Alaska. Even in June, the average high temperature is only in the 60s, which is ideal running weather. If you’re looking for an excuse to visit the most northern state and cross it off your bucket list, you might as well run a half while you’re there. The race is a part of Anchorage’s Summer Solstice Festival, which celebrates the longest day of the year. Due to being so far north, Anchorage only gets between four and five hours of darkness, which means you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors.

Another of Vacation Races’s National Park adjacent half marathons is one around Montana’s Glacier National Park. The point-to-point runs along the park’s eastern border and provides runners with incredible views of the park itself. While the first few miles of the course involve a fairly steep incline, the back half is a nice downhill leading to the prairie landscape that surrounds the park. You’ll finish at the historic Glacier Park Lodge.

Wine lovers pay attention! As the name implies, the race winds its way through Napa and Sonoma wine country, taking runners through some of the orchards where the region’s award-winning grapes are grown. Enjoy the views and Mediterranean climate as you run. Once you finish, you’ll receive a medal, and also wine at the post race wine festival.

Like the Hatfield McCoy Marathon, San Francisco’s signature marathon also comes with two accompanying halves. The Bridge Half, which follows the course of the marathon’s first half, takes runners out and back over the famed Golden Gate Bridge, and while this seems like ideal running, the wind, fog, and incline of the bridge does prove daunting for some runners. If you’d rather not spend so much time on the Golden Gate, you can opt for the City Half, which starts in Golden Gate Park and runs 13 miles across the width of the City. You really can’t go wrong with either choice!

                  11. Rocky Mountain Half Marathon

                    national park marathon

The name “Rocky Mountain Half Marathon” is perhaps more intimidating than the race itself. While the course borders Rocky Mountain State Park, it doesn’t actually run you through the mountains (although if you’d like to do a little mountain trail running post-race, you can certainly tack that on). Rather, this half runs you by the base of the Rockies, providing runners with stunning views without having to trek up the side of a cliff. There’s one incline at the beginning of the race, but it’s all downhill from there.

                    12. ET Full Moon Half Marathon

                      Register Here

Most half marathons begin in the morning, and they have good reason to do so. Not only is it easier to close roads before everyone is out and about for the day, but also it often beats the heat to keep racing injuries down. The ET Full Moon Half, however, which is held near Area 51 and alien-themed, begins in the evening, letting runners avoid the heat of a Nevada summer sun. You’ll need a headlamp, but hopefully you’ll survive an evening desert run without being abducted.

                      13. Habanero Hundred Half Marathon

While most of the races on this list are trying to avoid extreme temperatures, the Habanero Hundred has people running 100 miles in the blistering August sun on a ranch in the middle of Texas. Of course if you sign up for the half marathon length, you’ll be running about 87 miles less than those doing the 100 miler, but even 13 miles can be a lot in the sun. The race website actually states that most of the injuries resulting from the race come from the shorter distances, so if you’re planning on signing up for this trek, do some heat training and carry plenty of water. Plus the race’s aid stations are known for exciting food options, so you might get a slice of cake mid-run if you want it.

                        Location: Marquette, Michigan

                        Register Here

A hidden gem of the United States is the upper peninsula of Michigan. Nestled on the shore of Lake Superior is the quaint little town of Marquette. While the winters are brutal, the summers are glorious, and the half marathon, run to close out summer, is a scenic point-to-point course that starts outside of town in the wooded upper peninsula and winds its way through downtown to the lakeshore finish. The route is beautiful, and you’ll likely have ideal running temps. You can finish the day with a cliff dive along one of Michigan’s Great Lakes.

                        15. Kauai Half Marathon

While there’s no bad time to visit Hawaii, take Labor Day weekend to spend some extended time in the Pacific. Kauai’s half marathon is a loop course that sends runners deep into the island before looping back down to a beachy finish. Running inland does basically mean you’re running up the side of a volcano for the first half of the race, but that also means the last half is a nice casual downhill for six miles. Get a lei when you finish, celebrate with a mai tai, and then spend another few days resting your feet in the sand and surf.
