Kae Ravichandran - 2:38:57 2023 Boston Marathon, running a time of 2:38:57 to beat the field by over 10 minutes. Cal Calamia finished in second place in 2:51:00, and Matthew Powers was behind them, finishing third with a time of 2:54:54.

Ravichandran was happy with the effort, despite a quick start. “I went into the race telling myself I’m gonna stay conservative and then pick it up as the race goes on, but then I got pulled along with a group of friends for the first three miles,” she told Runner’s World.

After coming through the half marathon point in 1:16:52, she felt the quick start catch up with her during the Newton hills but kept reminding herself to be resilient. “I was in so much pain towards the end, but I think I mentally stayed with it, and overall it was pretty good,” she said.

To prepare for Boston, Ravichandran focused on incorporating hills into her daily runs and raced a half marathon last month as a tune-up. She ran around 70 to 80 miles a week during the height of her training cycle—all while being a medical student at the University of Vermont. “That’s definitely a huge time suck; lots of sleepless nights,” she said.

The Boston Marathon awarded trophies to the first, second, and third place finishers in the nonbinary division, but the runners won’t take home any prize money. The World Marathon Majors organization doesn’t provide a monetary purse in the nonbinary races, nor does the BAA.
