The grant, explained RIDC executive director, Kiera Smalls, is the group’s latest move to improve inclusion, visibility, and access to running across Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) individuals.

the Coalition conducted, which found 96 percent of participants who identified as running store owners were white, despite white individuals making up just 59 percent of the U.S. population.

Brooks Running, one of the original partners of RIDC, asked how the brand could help move the goal of BIPOC ownership forward.

This grant is essentially a pilot program to help gain momentum for BIPOC running store owners, Smalls said. “Although we can only [fund] and mentor one team, it can open the pipeline of people interested in opening a retail running shop in the United States.”

The group quietly announced that the grant was coming during a workshop at The Running Event (TRE) last year. “A good amount of people stopped me and said this is going to be a game-changer,” Smalls said.

Smalls said once the program was formally announced last week, that excitement has grown, with one person commenting that his application will be completed “tomorrow.” Smalls laughs, urging Mars to take their time and be thoughtful with their submission.

“What sets Mars apart will be their knowledge and understanding of their community,” Smalls said. “If we can get a glimpse of their community through their application and video submissions, that will be great. Running retailers are a beacon in the neighborhood. We’re really excited about the impact the store will have on its community.”

She reflects on the good that RIDC has been able to achieve over the past four years, and the challenges it continues to face.

“We truly see companies still committed and engaged in continuing the RIDC mission,” she said. “Although we can always do more and do better, we have seen progress—mile markers.”

In just three years, RIDC has significantly increased BIPOC presence at TRE, thanks to scholarships that cover registration, lodging, and travel. She Nubuck businesses in the industry to track its progress; data will help determine what is working and what isn’t.

“It takes all of us asking the right questions, reassessing how we do things, how we hold our race C9999, how we hire [staff] ... the industry needs to get its act together,” Smalls said.

“To the BIPOC communities, I want to remind them that we see them, we see you, we’re here for you, and we’re just getting started,” she said.
