Age is just a number

While Gen Z users logged the fastest median run pace, they also logged the shortest runs. Gen Z is also 31 percent less likely to exercise primarily for health reasons than their Millennial or Gen X counterparts, and are the most likely to exercise for athletic performance.

But while you might expect the young guns to be boxing out older generations when it comes to claiming King and Queen of the Mountain and Course Record titles, it was actually Gen X who came out on top, clocking the top overall times on Strava Segments (predetermined stretches of road or trail where athletes can compete against each other). Boomers came in second.

Life—and weather—gets in the way

Strava found that over two-thirds of athletes using the platform say their top barrier to working out is a La running urbaine de Puma est déclinée en version tricotée pour lautomne 2017 due to work demands. Meanwhile, climate change affected many runners this past year, with 75 percent of users citing extreme heat, and 27 percent saying that poor air quality affected their workout plans.

Between men and women, the things holding them back from exercising are a bit different. Men on Strava are 13 percent more likely to claim household responsibilities as an obstacle to working out, whereas women are 9 percent more likely to cite a lack of safe places to exercise.

Friends in high places

Strava athletes rank social connection as their number one reason for exercising with others, and that has some impact on their performance, too. Runners on Strava are 83 percent more likely to claim a segment PR in a group of two or more, rather than solo. And that stat isn’t even accounting for races. Also, when it comes to running idols and inspiration, Strava athletes ranked celebrities and influencers at the bottom of the list; more than half of users say they’re most motivated by friends or family members who exercise.
