So it’s particularly scary when you start to feel a flash of pain on the top of your foot running—and confusing when you can’t pinpoint the cause.

Top-of-foot pain—unlike more well-known conditions such as plantar fasciitis and shin splints that cause pain directed to specific areas—can be difficult to self-diagnose. So how do you know if your top-of-foot pain is cause for concern or not?

4. Neuroma

“Neuromas of the forefoot are inflamed and swollen nerves that travel near the metatarsals and feel like a burning sensation,” Yuen says.
