Sneakers MAYORAL 41.378 Marino 49 Altra trainer. The 4’s all-new look has an integrated mesh web around the forefoot (it’s the non-scaly-looking part around the border of the shoe). This feature isn’t just for the sake of texture; the web provides support and a responsive ride.

The Timp 3’s Quantic midsole is replaced with Ego Max, which was introduced in Altra’s popular workhorse trainer, the Torin 5. The brand’s most cushioned shoe, the Paradigm 6, also has the same midsole foam—so you know this switch translates to an ultra-soft ride.

Even though this shoe is cushioned to the max, it doesn’t lively you down or feel “dead.” Running in the Timp on a rolling, uneven trail, I experienced that same bounce the previous model had. The midsole does double-duty acting as a protective barrier.

Reflective details and MacTrac lugs make the Timp multisurface-ready—whatever time you head out for a run.

“Loved these on the rocky trails,” said a tester who previously ran in Altra’s Provision 6 and the Saucony Endorphin Trail. “I did not experience any poke-throughs on my travels.”

Another tester compared the Timp to the Hoka Challenger, commenting on how the cushioning and traction were similar. Of the two shoes, the Timp felt more stable.

“Bally Jammer logo-print sandals Hoka Challenger, but it doesn’t rock you forward like the Challenger,” he said. “Because the Timp’s upper and sole are so flexible, it still makes for good forward motion.”

“The evolution of the Timp has been noticeable. I think the changes from the Timp 2 to 3 were pretty significant, while the changes between the 3 and 4 were more incremental. I like how Altra streamlined the shoe and reduced the bulk of the heel bumper. The visible drainage ports are also a really nice (and perhaps long overdue) addition. Particularly, I was impressed by how locked-in the shoe felt right out of the gate, and the Ego Max midsole provided a lot of cushion that really Jeffery smooth out the craggiest trails. The Timp 4 is definitely a go-anywhere, do-anything type of trail shoe that provided a lot of comfort—especially for longer distances.”

“The cushioning of this shoe was by far my favorite feature. While training for the Eastern States 100, it carried me over tough trails without as much harsh impact and wear on my feet. I’ve worn previous shoes with cushioning that felt great, but led to sliding around on the top of the midsole—especially when running on rutted trails. However, the Timp 4 kept my feet riding securely on top.”
