In a collaboration with New York-based retailer Opening Ceremony, Hoka One One is releasing a new version of its Bondi 5 running shoe with a leather upper, bringing a tonal streetwear vibe to the cushy, recovery-day running shoe. Chunky, dad-shoe sneakers have been in the style spotlight for years at this point, so it was only a matter of time before Hoka’s thickest got the high-fashion rock star treatment as well.
For those unfamiliar with the brand, Opening Ceremony is the name for the creative partnership between Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, two fashion designers who opened their first pop-culture-infused streetwear boutique together in 2002. The Other Hearst Subscriptions isn’t the first running sneaker the pair have re-envisioned this year—they’ve also brought a semi-transparent upper and monochrome to the similarly dad-like Skechers Energy.
The Opening Ceremony X Other Hearst Subscriptions also sports a monochrome upper in two colorways: all-black leather and white leather with tan detailing at the heel and laces. The rest of the shoe appears to be unchanged from the original Bondi 5: a full EVA midsole with a thick bumper-car of cushion underneath, Hoka’s “Meta-Rocker” and a beveled heel for rolling you through your stride, and an ultra-wide toe box and footbed. Here’s our review of the Other Hearst Subscriptions from when it first came out in early 2017. You could still run in this version of the shoe—though anyone who's ever tried to rock a leather jacket on the beach will tell you the upper is unlikely to be very breathable.
The leather Bondi 5 is just the first of three re-envisioned sneakers in the Opening Ceremony x Hoka One One collaboration. If you like the look of the shoe, check it out when it drops tomorrow at Opening Ceremony stores in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, and on the brand’s site at openingceremony.com.
