This week Saucony is re-releasing its original Grid Web running shoe, nudging the throwback sneaker market forward on the timeline to the year 2000. The shoe, which was first re-introduced last month through a collaboration with the Brooklyn-based store Kith in white and neon, will now be available in this OG White/Grey/Blue colorway.
Initially I found it a bit jarring that a shoe released in my cat’s lifetime could already be considered “retro”—much like the first time I heard one of the hottest jams of my youth played on the oldies channel. But contemplation-of-fleeting-mortality aside, the Grid Web’s style is pure vintage, with a bright white mesh upper, swooping plastic overlays, a thick midsole with an aggressive midfoot shank, and a grippy rubber outsole.
Sneaker life comes at you fast and foam midsole technology has come a long way since the 2000s—so in 2019, these shoes are probably best suited to cross-training or casual wear and not hunting down PRs or course records. The classic ‘aughts trainers retail for $119 from sneakersnstuff.com and other sellers starting July 26.
