Modern Water Management: Focus on the Habitat, the Future in the River. (German)
One of the most serious violations of the conservation of our wild fish populations is the widespread practice of introducing and stocking farmed fish into our waters.
Therefore, one of the most important tasks in fish management is to utilize locally adapted, or even better, as local a fish population as possible for rearing and stocking, populations that are linked to specific environmental conditions in individual water bodies. These are genetically determined differences that have developed over very long periods.
It is impressive—and frightening at the same time—how quickly evolution in a breeding tank eliminates the instincts that have ensured survival for millennia.
A stocked fish that is not afraid of predators is an "easy meal" in the clear waters of the Salzkammergut region. It does not protect the population but merely feeds the predators.
The presentation will report on practical examples of how different approaches must be taken in the management of our waters.
