Steffen Schulz is one of Europe's most renowned figures in modern predator fly fishing. For many years, Steffen was as an ambassador for the globally acclaimed brands Abu Garcia and Berkley. He was born and raised in classic spin fishing before consistently pursuing modern predator fly fishing, initially with Hardy. For over 15 years, he has been a key figure in the European angling scene as an author, photographer, ambassador, consultant, and content creator. His specialties include targeted fly fishing for pike, zander, and perch – preferably from a belly boat, where he combines innovative techniques with state-of-the-art sonar technology.
From an early age, the Berlin native combined scientific curiosity with passion.
His university thesis at the University of Göttingen already focused on the "Potential of Angling Tourism in Southeast Asia." After stays in France and Vietnam, he began working as a freelance writer in 2008 for renowned angling magazines such as Blinker and Esox, as well as their international subsidiaries. Soon, his work was published in Fisch & Fang, Der Raubfisch, Fisch & Fliege, and numerous international titles—now in over 26 magazines across Europe, many featuring cover photos and sometimes video contributions. Writing in-depth articles has always been one of his greatest passions, alongside actively fishing.
Today, Steffen is a regular freelance contributor to leading publications and is known throughout Europe via his Instagram channel @steffen_schulz_flyfish, where he shares modern predator fishing strategies, technical setups, and innovative lure concepts. His content combines technical precision with authenticity and a style that is both profound and down-to-earth.
As a member of the Garmin Fishing Team and a brand ambassador for various companies in the industry, Steffen actively participates in the development and testing of new products. Together with his fly-tying partners, he designs and tests innovative fly patterns and streamer designs that meet the demands of modern techniques – from pelagic fishing to precise fly fishing around structures.
