Runner’s World Review

Best Debut. Lace 'em and forget 'em. As a triathlon company, Zoot makes primarily pull-on racing models, but the Solana is perfect for the single-sport crowd, to whom they're trying to expand. While simple in construction, the shoe showed off in the lab, earning above-average marks for cushioning and flexibility. Testers loved the neutral, responsive ride underfoot, but the highest praise was reserved for the fit: A seamless internal layer topped with breathable mesh and surrounded by a supportive band provided a secure feel and freedom for toes. "I ended up loving these shoes as much as you can love something you don't notice," says John Spink of East Lansing. "The shoes were like an extension of my own body."

Runner’s World Wear Testers Say

"The Zoot Solana is a great shoe. It's lightweight and flexible, and wearing it feels like you're running barefoot, yet there's still a comfortable level of support and protection. It's an ideal race shoe for midlength events."

We put each shoe through real-world usage and a battery of mechanical tests in our lab to provide you with objective — and exclusive — data. In addition to a shoe's weight, we measure sole thickness (everything that sits between your foot and the road), how well the foam cushions your stride, and the flexibility of the forefoot. All this is taken into account in our reviews of each shoe.
