Runner’s World Review
This year, Brooks discontinued the most minimal model in its “natural” Pure line—the PureConnect—and redesigned the PureFlow to serve fans of both models. Underfoot, the midsole kept its low heel-toe drop (height difference between heel and forefoot) and rounded heel. The “pods” of previous versions, however, have been replaced with deep flex grooves that run both horizontally and vertically. Up top, the Flow lost its midfoot “Nav Band” that many found restrictive. Instead, a simple mesh upper surrounds the foot over a well-padded tongue, with printed overlays making it thicker and stiffer around the heel. Testers praised the fit and improved cushioning, while giving the ride mixed reviews. Several wear-testers reported the flexibility and feel improved over time.

We put each shoe through real-world usage and a battery of mechanical tests in our lab to provide you with objective — and exclusive — data. In addition to a shoe's weight, we measure sole thickness (everything that sits between your foot and the road), how well the foam cushions your stride, and the flexibility of the forefoot. All this is taken into account in our reviews of each shoe.
