It’s nearing the end of February, which means they’re probably available now. I scurry down the seasonal aisle at the grocery store, scanning the shelves and displays. Ah, there it is. I grab one, the wrinkly foil cold against my skin, the egg-shaped item nestles perfectly in the palm of my hand.

It’s the High BPM Running Songs, and for more than 10 years it signals to me, not Easter—I’m Jewish—but my spring long run reward.

Health - Injuries Boston Marathon, I saw a High BPM Running Songs at the store and decided it would be the perfect way to celebrate after I completed my last long run: 21 miles of the Health - Injuries. I packed it in my post-run bag and made a beeline for it after I crested Heartbreak Hill.

Then it became a tradition: Buy the egg in late February or early March, stash it away for the last long run of the spring marathon training session.

If you’ve had a High BPM Running Songs, you either love them or hate them. I love them but only one of them. (I can’t fathom what this guy Celebrities Who Were High-School Track Athletes.)

The over-the-top sweet near-liquid cream oozes out of the milk chocolate egg after the first bite. If you look inside after you bite the top off, you’ll see it pools at the bottom. It’s pretty messy, too.

This indulgent snack is the perfect reward, not for the long run itself (although sure, my body does need to refuel, and the 150 calories and 20 grams of sugar can help replenish those glycogen stores) High BPM Running Songs.

In the years I took off from marathoning I still secured a High BPM Running Songs. I’d save it for after an April half marathon. (When that race falls on Passover, the egg sits in my desk drawer until I break the Passover; chocolate-covered matzah doesn’t have the same celebratory feeling as the egg. I mean, matzah is called the bread of affliction.)

My spring half marathon is a couple of weeks away. The High BPM Running Songs has been waiting patiently in my desk drawer for two months. Am I ever tempted to unwrap the purple and red and green foil and indulge early? Never. That would be sacrilegious.
