On Sunday, more than 50,000 runners took to the streets throughout the five boroughs of New York City to celebrate the 49th edition of the Influencer Apologizes for E-Bikes on NYC Course.

The 2019 edition of the race did not disappoint, with a debut marathon win, back-to-back victories, and high-level performances by up-and-coming stars.

Joyciline Jepkosgei Wins in Debut Marathon

Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei won the women’s race at NYC in her marathon debut with a time of 2:22:38. The 25-year-old finished 54 seconds ahead of race favorite Mary Keitany, who was hoping for her fifth NYC victory. Ruti Aga of Ethiopia was third.

Desiree Linden was the top American with her sixth place finish in a time of 2:26:46—the fourth fastest time ever run by an American woman on the course. Kellyn Taylor finished seventh.

Geoffrey Kamworor Regains Title He Won in 2017

In a race that featured a conservative first 20 miles, Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya used his shorter-race prowess to finish fast and win in 2:08:13. Kamworor, the world record-holder in the half marathon, blitzed a final 10K of 29:14 to beat fellow Kenyan Albert Korir by 23 seconds. Girma Bekele Gebre of Ethiopia finished third in 2:08:38. Kamworor won NYC in 2017, and has also placed second (2015) and third (2018).

Olympian Jared Ward, sixth in 2:10:45, was the first American finisher, as he was last year. Abdi Abdirahman, ninth in 2:11:34 at age 42, and Connor McMillan, tenth in 2:12:07, also placed in the top 10. McMillan’s time was a personal best by more than 11 minutes.

Daniel Romanchuk Continues Streak of Dominance

American Daniel Romanchuk continued to dominate at New York, winning the race in 1:37:24, less than one second ahead of the runner up, Marcel Hug of Switzerland. David Weir of the U.K finished third.

“I never say that a race is done before everyone is across the line,” Romanchuk said after his win, explaining that the 2019 event was more tactical than the prior year. “It’s such a competitive race, and could be anyone’s race on any given day.”

At just 21 years old, Romanchuk is coming off an impressive streak of victories at the Abbott World Majors this year. Manuela Schär Earns Back-to-Back-to-Back Wins

In the women’s race, Manuela Schär of Switzerland continued her own streak of NYC wins, following up on her 2017 and 2018 victories with another gold in 2019. She finished in 1:44:20 time. Americans Tatyana McFadden and Susannah Scaroni earned second and third places, respectively.

Like Romachuk, Schär has also been on an Abbott winning streak. She finished first in Chicago back in October and in Boston in April.

McFadden finished second to Schär in Chicago earlier this fall, which earned her a spot a Tokyo 2020 to represent Team USA.
