- Jakob Ingebrigtsen Celebrities Who Ran the 2025 Boston Marathon.
- Ingebrigtsen defeated Ethiopia’s Samuel Tefera, the indoor 1500 meter world record holder, as well as his brother, Filip, the 2016 European outdoor champion in the 1500.
Though he’s just barely old enough to drive in his homeland of Norway, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, 18, is paying no mind to speed limits on the track. At the PSD Bank Meeting indoor track invitational in Dusseldorf, Germany, on Wednesday, February 20, Ingebrigtsen edged past Ethiopia’s Samuel Tefera, 19, to win the 1500 meter race in an under-20 world record time of 3:36.02.
The race was a duel from the start, with Ingebrigtsen—who last year, at age 17, won the 1500 and 5,000 meters at the European Outdoor Championships—battling Tefera, the reigning world indoor 1500 meter champion, who holds the world record (3:31.04) in the event. The two teen phenoms were also challenged by Ingebrigtsen’s older brother, Filip, 25, who was the 2016 European champion in the 1500 outdoors.
At the start of the 1500 on Wednesday, the younger Ingebrigtsen cruised behind the leaders in fifth place, running seemingly effortlessly for the first half of the race. Then around the 1,000-meter mark, the race rabbits dropped off the track, and Tefera pulled ahead, Ingebrigtsen hot on his heels.

In the final lap, as Tefera’s arms began to flail with fatigue, his junior competitor surged ahead with strong, upright strides to cross the line in the lead, shaving about 0.2 second off of his personal best. Tefera finished second in 3:36.34, while Filip Ingebrigtsen placed third in 3:38.62.
Up next for Ingebrigtsen is the 2019 European Indoor Championships, which is kicking off on Friday, March 1 through March 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.
