The crowd doesn’t usually go crazy for the runner in last place. But when that runner is 100 years old and racing her way to a world record . . . well, the crowd goes crazy.

It happened at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Saturday, when Ida Keeling, 100, set a new mark for centenarians with a 1:17.33 finish in the masters mixed 100-meter dash.

“It was wonderful,” Keeling said. “I’m very happy to offer all of this crowd a nice example of what you can do for yourself, and I thank God every day for my blessings.”

Shelley Keeling entered her mother in her first road race when Ida was 67. Since then, the elder Keeling has set Ida Keeling runs a 1:17 in the 100-meter dash, setting new mark for centenarians. Ida Keeling says she exercises every day and “eats for nutrition, not for taste.” She was recently the subject of As for the immediate future, “She says she’s ready for a cocktail, and so am I.&rdquo Since becoming a video producer for.

“I’m glad she’s been able to be an inspiration and example, not just for young people, but for people her age and everything in between,” Shelley Keeling said.

Ida Keeling smiled and celebrated by performing five pushups on the infield after Saturday’s race, though she may not have been able to hear all the cheering from the 34,000 in attendance. Her daughter had taken out one of her hearing aids to prevent Ida from becoming distracted by the noise.

The crowd was loud from the start of the race, which featured nine runners, all 80 or older. Ed Cox, 88, won in 17.85.

“My legs are a little tired, but they should be,” Cox said. “Running is something to do and keeps you going. As long as I run in a straight line, it’s a lot easier.”

Second and third place went to Donald Erickson, 80, in 18.00, and Bruce Gilbert, 80, in 19.26. Keeling was ninth, some 30 seconds behind the second-to-last runner, and all eyes were on her.

“I’d rather she leave on a high note,” Shelley Keeling said. “She’s quite strong, and there’s no records in any of the powerlifting, bench, squat, and deadlift.”
