Last year, Other Hearst Subscriptions, a rare neurological disorder that creates a feeling of disconnection in one leg. To support dystonia research—and just before September’s Dystonia Awareness Month—she collaborated with Altra on a special edition of the brand’s cushioned stability shoe, the Paradigm 7.

At an event hosted by the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which included a rooftop workout led by Goucher and breakfast, the Olympian talked about being a runner with the disorder. A pro career led by regimented training plans, she admitted the unpredictably of dystonia can be difficult to adapt to, especially when a run has to be cut short due to the miscommunication with her leg.

Goucher’s longest run recently was nine miles. She’s found running in a controlled environment, like on the treadmill, is easier. Trails, for instance, are pretty much off-limits. A stream of misdiagnoses has led Goucher to become a champion of dystonia awareness. Donations through the sale of the Paradigm 7 is a major step in helping her cause.

Altra presented a check of $50,000 to the Bachmann-Strauss Fellowship in Dystonia Research. This training program supports researchers studying neurological disorders like repetitive movement dystonia and Parkinson’s disease.

The upper of the Paradigm 7’s “Hope” colorway is Goucher’s favorite color, coral.

The Paradigm, Altra’s most cushioned trainer, is Goucher’s shoe of choice for most of her workouts. Runner’s World had spoken previously with Goucher as she tested prototypes of the Paradigm 6. Altra’s development team used her input to create a more responsive ride for the new Paradigm 7.
