Hoka One One recently released two camouflaged and color-blocked editions of its Torrent trail running shoe in collaboration with the Xterra multi-sport race series. This is the first shoe Xterra has put its name on, but it’s a team-up that fits with the brand’s focus on off-road triathlons and races that combine trail running with swimming, mountain biking, and kayaking/SUP.
The shoe itself isn’t new—the race-oriented Torrent made its debut late last year and won us over with its snappy, firm forefoot and well-cushioned heel. Fans of the Hoka Speedgoat appreciated that the Torrent was lighter and sleeker than their longtime favorite without losing much cushion. At 9.3 ounces for a men’s size 9 and 7.7 ounces for a women’s size 7, the shoe is still burly enough for rough terrain and has a surprisingly agile feel despite its abundant foam.
The Torrent’s mesh upper is designed to be snug-fitting and breathable, with a relaxed fit in the toe box that keeps your forefoot from cramming forward on a descent. We also liked the aggressive outsole, with its multi-shaped lug pattern that let us enact our wildest Spiderman fantasies on rocky climbs. Heck, just read our full review here if you want more details of the shoe before it got the Xterra paint job. Prior to these Torrent colorways, Hoka One One had only collaborated with the athleisure brand Outdoor Voices on a line of Clifton 4 road shoes and the Japanese brand Engineered Garments.
The Hoka One One Xterra Torrent is on sale now in traditional green camo with a yellow midsole and a snow camo look complete with a red midsole. Get a pair for $130 in unisex sizes from hokeoneone.com, xterraplanet.com, and other sellers.
