Hoka One One recently released two camouflaged and color-blocked editions of its Torrent trail running shoe in collaboration with the Xterra multi-sport race series. This is the first shoe Xterra has put its name on, but it’s a team-up that fits with the brand’s focus on off-road triathlons and races that combine trail running with swimming, mountain biking, and kayaking/SUP.

The shoe itself isn’t new—the race-oriented Torrent made its debut late last year and won us over with its snappy, firm forefoot and well-cushioned heel. Fans of the Hoka Speedgoat appreciated that the Torrent was lighter and sleeker than their longtime favorite without losing much cushion. At 9.3 ounces for a men’s size 9 and 7.7 ounces for a women’s size 7, the shoe is still burly enough for rough terrain and has a surprisingly agile feel despite its abundant foam.
The Torrent’s mesh upper is designed to be snug-fitting and breathable, with a relaxed fit in the toe box that keeps your forefoot from cramming forward on a descent. We also liked the aggressive outsole, with its multi-shaped lug pattern that let us enact our wildest Spiderman fantasies on rocky climbs.
