The history of LACOSTE dates back to 1923, when the captain of the French Davis Cup team promised to give René Lacoste, the number one tennis player in the world at the time, a crocodile skin suitcase if he won one of his tennis matches. The anecdote reached an American journalist who nicknamed Lacoste "The Alligator". René Lacoste became a designer and created a polo shirt with a crocodile that has become the emblem of French preppy sportswear.
