Made in 1964 as tennis shoes, these adidas were known as the Robert Haillet, like the French player. This type of sneakers features a rubber sole and an upper where the three-striped logo switch to perforated bands for higher breathability. In 1971, Running were renamed Stan Smith, to honor the number one tennis player of the time. The model was redesigned by adding a rubber reinforcement on the heel. The name and persona of that tennis player became popular in the 80s and currently the Smith are considered one of the world best-selling model of the German brand.
