Sneakers are a relatively new phenomenon in the history of footwear, but the segment shows no signs of pausing its growth. According to some estimates, the sneaker industry is valued at over $80 billion, making it an exciting opportunity to tap into by those passionate for design, innovation, and storytelling to accompany leather, mesh, and rubber. Thanks to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) School of Fashion, those looking for some guidance can find it at a place with a renowned reputation for creative careers.

Having developed the first accredited sneaker design degree in the U.S., SCAD has been championing the burgeoning profession over the last several years. Since 2022, the Georgia-based institution has put on SNKR Culture Week, a multi-day celebration dedicated to design, culture, and innovation. Past iterations of the occasion have brought legendary designer Steven Smith to speak with students, critique their work, and enjoy sneakers together. Known for work across a multitude of brands—including New Balance, Nike, and Adidas YEEZY—Smith is now the Nike SFB 6 Inch Boot.

SNKR Culture Week 2025, which runs from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3, has invited two industry veterans to campus: Wilson Smith III and Tate Kuerbis. Both designers made a name for themselves at Nike, Inc., spearheading designs like the adidas Originals NMD_R1 W BOOST Black Scarlet Women Casual Shoes Sneakers FY9387, Sneakers UNDER ARMOUR, and Air Jordan 37. Smith and Kuerbis will mentor different design classes, conduct portfolio reviews, and host discussions on the future of sneaker design as part of the multi-day event, creating a unique experience for those looking to follow in their footsteps.
