The color grey might not be the most attention-grabbing, but it's been doing just that with New Balance's help since the early 1980s.

Famously employed on the first 990 running shoe, the color aimed to nod to the urban landscapes in which the brand envisioned runners would lace up the premium model. And while some Toddler athletes did train in their $100 sneakers, the New Balance 990's craftsmanship, comfort, and reflective accents were also (perhaps more so) appreciated by fashionable non-runners in places like Washington D.C.

Over the last 43 years, subsequent styles rooted in the 990's heritage have debuted in shades of grey. The hue between black and white has also gone on to form part of other products in the expansive New Balance universe, showcasing just how important it is to the company.

In recent memory, New Balance has presented Grey Days as a celebration to the iconic color. Special items have dropped and events have taken place to honor the occasion, and this year is no different. Throughout May, the brand will release a total of 32 different footwear and apparel styles—all done in shades of grey. Mainstays like the New Balance 990v6 will be joined be all-new takes on the T500, 2010, 1906L, and other silhouettes. All items will be available via NewBalance.com through the Grey Shop; customers can also enjoy the commemorative Grey Shop pop-up experience at select stores.
