Nothing brings the strangeness of the fashion industry into stark relief like stumbling across a $24,000 bag and comparing it to another bag as the lower-priced option. But compared to croc bags by both The Row and Hermes, that’s exactly what this Ralph Lauren stunner is. Hermes Birkins in alligator cost a bit less than their crocodile counterparts (they also tend to be smaller, which would explain the difference), but considering the size of this bag and the exacting standards to which Lauren’s Purple Label products are held, this is a beautiful option for both men and women with enviable budgets and a love for traditional, uncluttered leather goods design. The difference between this bag and the backpack, for me, is the fact that a) it comes from a reputable company with a history of luxe handbags and b) it’s polished.
This is not a trendy bag that will go out of style next year. On top of that, on Mr. Porter, it shoes that everything is croco including the luggage tag and detachable shoulder strap.
There’s no replacement for experience and a keen eye for design, function, and detail. I’m not a fan of exotic animal skins, but this bag is stunning.
And, it’s a bag that I could actually see my husband carrying.
Interesting would pay off my house first
A stunning bag. Beautiful to contemplate and to enjoy in much the same way as one enjoys an afternoon in a wonderful museum. You can appreciate a Renoir, but most of us aren’t going to be bringing one home.
As I said about the Olsen’s bag, I can’t imagine ever owning it, even if I had that kind of money to spend. Given the economic crisis this country is facing, I don’t even want to think about items such as this bag anymore. Perhaps I’ve rediscovered my ability to be offended by conspicuous consumption. And perhaps that’s not a bad thing.

If I could buy such an item, I would want a timeless classic. No offence intended to the Olsen young ladies and their Row bags – but who are they kidding?

The truth is that they are both unbelievably beautiful. For me especially the travel bag, because it is a piece that you can pass on to your family, since it’s a classic style that will never go out of style. That is like owning a classic CHANEL, HERMES or a classic FERRAGAMO. Obviously, we would also be paying for the name, experience and taste. Are they too expensive? Well, things are as much as people are willing to pay for them! The good news is that if you want some croc, but can’t afford the prices of the already established designers, you can go with some up and coming designer like myself.
