One of the most buzzed about shows of Milan Fashion Week comes under the direction of creative genius Alessandro Michele at Gucci. Opening Milan Fashion week yesterday, the show took place at the Gucci Hub and as per usual, it was a magical experience which played on all of the behind the scenes work that it takes to put on a fashion show. The show opened with a glimpse into the pre-show backstage routine, complete with dramatic music and an air of hustle and bustle. Michele described the art of the fashion show as ‘a magic event bursting with enchantment’, and though many in the industry have discussed the death of the fashion show, at Gucci the art of the show is alive and well.
The bags remain true to Michele’s current aesthetic, though this season they are arguably less playful and quirky and a bit more commercial. Despite the tone-downed nature of the bags, they remain vintage inspired, with a classic and timeless appeal. The Horsebit hardware appeared on a new structured shape with long top handles, which we first saw in Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2020 lookbook Donates His Gucci Rainbow Boots.
And while his spring show showcased beloved house classics such as the Dionysus and Sylvie, this show put a focus on new styles from the brand, including a brand new, but old hobo silhouette. Michele dipped into Gucci’s archive to bring back this shape, once called the Jackie Bag. It was shown in various iterations from colorful smooth leathers to Gucci’s iconic GG print. Various sizes of the bag were shown as well as versions with top handles and a shoulder strap version, which was first seen on Gucci’s Men’s Fall/Winter 2020 runway. Wasn’t #6 once called the “Jackie O” bag? It’s vintage, but with a new, higher price tag. I love the confidence that the model in #9 exudes with her snagged pantyhose, but carrying a contemporary bucket bag. Love the fun contrast!

Living in Milan (Italy) I just saw the new Gucci Show in Milan: unbelievable (not in good way), but I have been said “they sweatshirt a lot” (45% in Asia mostly China) with a terrible increase at the end of 2019. Still I see no ideas in this new path. I guess Tom Ford was the last King for Gucci (his last show in LA demonstrates his endless class). I would like to see the old Gucci it was so refined…. But what about the handbags? For our market 57% are sold in Italy (where we buy accessorizes) and you know we Italian women are very demanding when it comes to elegance…no fuss pls. And that’s why with no new ideas (profit and creativity together?) it comes back the archive with the old “never old” classic bags. no wonder…Sorry this is not Italian style this is only for profit.
Hmm, well we all have our own opinion. Let’s get real, it is always for profit, all designers. I think there is something for every taste at Gucci, the OTT and the minimalist.

So glad, I kept my monogrammed Jackie O from the early 90’s. It looks exactly like the new version, with the exception of the closure. All things old (vintage) are new again! I have a couple of iconic Jimmy Choo bags, hoping they get a reboot as well.
