One thing I absolutely adore about Coach is that for the past few years, right after Stuart Vevers shows at NYFW, at least one item (almost always a bag—lucky us) becomes available straight off the runway. This eliminates the long wait, which often backfires and leaves us feeling more annoyed than excited when the bag finally arrives in stores months later.
See the bag, like the bag, buy the bag. Simple as that. This season, that bag is a new take on the beloved Coach Kisslock, which sold out quickly the last time it was offered.

Okay, yes Coach is hitting it out of the park, but some of their marketing and drops are really annoying! This sells out before I even had a chance to know it existed, and yet still waiting for the smaller kisslocks that were featured on the runway two seasons ago. So confused!
I don’t disagree—I totally get that limited quantities will be dropped, but I do think that they need to walk the fine line between excitement, scarcity, and annoyance! I covered this bag as soon as I saw it hit the site, and it was already sold out in every colorway!
I get there’s a line…but at least give us a chance! Tell us when it will drop beforehand and make it live. Don’t just put something up on the website already sold out – there’s no excitement in that!
I’m always curious how many bags designers make that immediately sell out? Or, if they do market research re: what ppl want and then deliberately make fewer bags to create a sense of exclusivity. Personally, I don’t even try to get one in the secondary market, where the price can be higher, because I’m not playing their games. I’m patient and wait for the next “hot/it” bag to hit the market because every season there are new, and more desirable bags.
A company like Coach would have numbers and stats on past drops, and I am certain it spends a lot of money researching what its clients are buying and selling, how quickly, and how often. There is scarcity and buildup in having an item sell out, but I think today’s consumer gets frustrated with that and moves along to the next bag.
