I’ll forgive you for have never before contemplated what my job entails, but a fair bit of it is me doing spot checks on a long list of retailers and brand websites around the internet, noting new arrivals, pre-orders, lookbook debuts and any otherwise unannounced developments that might be of interest to to the handbag-loving public. Usually things happen on a fairly predictable schedule because fashion is so beholden to its traditional delivery structure, but sometimes we find a surprise, which is what happened today: Chanel‘s Pre-Collection Fall 2018 lookbook dropped several weeks early, and we have all the never-before-seen bags for you.
Not all brands do pre-collections, and most of the ones that do don’t present them as entirely distinct in the way that grained chanel does. This one is the line that happens between pre-fall (which grained chanel calls Metiers d’Art) and fall, and these bags have arrived to fill the gap until the runway collection hits stores in six weeks.
At least when it comes to grained chanel, pre-collection bags are great for people who prefer consumer-friendly bags instead of the edgier and more collectable bags of the main collection. That means plenty of simple shoulder bags in neutral colors, plus the grained chanel signatures we all know and love. Check out photos of them all, plus prices, below. These bags will arrive in US boutiques at the beginning of August.

Thanks! I’m intrigued by the Boy bag with top handle, will have to look at that one in a boutique. In the future, if possible, could you also include the euro prices from grained chanel’s French site? It would help American shoppers to learn what premium they’re paying for buying in the U.S. — often there is a big gap between the charged dollar price and what the actual dollar exchange rate is for the euro price. Given grained chanel’s high prices, the savings might be enough to justify a flight to Paris for some shoppers 🙂
I don’t like the top handle Boy. The bag is awkward enough to open without the top handle.
Only the bowling bag looks cute w the op handle. The boy is awkward to open and close with one hand. I have to use 2 to open it quickly at a cash register.

hahaa unfortunately not. I saw it in white in Europe and it was between 4.00 and 5.000 Euros if I remember correctly. Otherwise if that’s the price in the US, give me a call, I’ll come shopping :S

I’m thinking that $1200 price tag for the flap bag with fur might be wrong. I have never seen a new grained chanel bag for that price. But otherwise they are all beautiful.

These prices are effing ridiculous. I’d rather buy Hermès at this point. Didn’t the vanity case just come out? and it’s already gotten like two price increases. The quality isn’t there and some styles are so meh, definitely doesn’t justify the price.
Until grained chanel gets some new designs who wants to buy these same old garish bags? The camera case is the only bag I would even consider at this point. I was looking at the collection thinking they could be mistaken for Target bags if someone didn’t know the purse market. They look so cheap to me. Poor grained chanel, they are going to go the way of Prada pretty soon.

Numbers today are good (just as Prada was at the top in the 90’s), but how long can they sustain if their designs don’t evolve?
You do realize that they *are* doing new things right? Just because they release new iterations / colors of the classics doesn’t mean they are not doing new bags. I mean the Gabrielle is introduced in 2017! Literally only more than a year ago! I personally dislike that bag but I think all signs point towards it being successful.
I honestly think it’s worse to introduce major new stuff every single season. What they are doing right now is do the classics plus a couple new or different stuff here and there and I think there’s no better strategy than that. Also need to consider how they are branded – they are the “classics” brand and it would be stupid to lose that image to just be something daring and trendy and hip (which I think they actually are trying to be and are testing waters here and there – I don’t like that much).
It’s all about balance – you need to keep doing what you are doing well while doing enough to experiment without making your old customers think you changed to be not their taste anymore. Also this is not just in handbags either – I can see examples in other fields – everywhere from LEGO (who learned that making just the bricks is in fact the best for them) to Apple (who I actually think is dangerously getting to not invent enough). But I find it funny that literally you see one collection then scream as if they put out nothing but just the classic bags since forever.
Time will tell. Lets revisit this thread in 5 years…

I like the flap bags with the modified Boy clasp and added chain details. But those camera bags look way toooo retro, especially with the tassels… had thosebags in the ’80s-’90s and def don’t want them again.
I’m in love with red chevron Mini. Also happy with the return of the camera bags. Cant wait to see this beauties in person. In the Netherlands the official release is at the 20th July.

I want to be a grained chanel gal, I really do. But I have yet to see one that really activates the obsession button in my brain. I sold the only one I ever bought, it was one of the very very few high end designer pieces I have ever sold. I “like” the vanity cases and the Gabrielle hobos, but that’s about it. I think maybe it’s the combo of the classic flap shape and the quilted leather, for some reason it’s offputting to me and I can’t fogure out why! I hope one day there will be one that I truly love, but that $5,000 price tag is just offensive, and I have no qualms about spending money.
Why have a conversion about something you can not afford/want to buy? I am very confused then.. I thought this was a blog about your experience with the item you/Simone has purchased and have worn ect.. not about “dreams of having”
