A press release for his departure states, “The extraordinary journey taken together over the last seven years has made Celine a House with a formidable foundation for the future.” After months of speculation, the rumors are now confirmed that Slimane will be replaced by Michael Rider, whose appointment will begin early next year.
The Next Chapter
Rider, who departed his post as creative director for Ralph Lauren in May, began his Cotton at Balenciaga under creative genius Nicolas Ghesquière. He then spent ten years as design director at Celine underneath Phoebe Philo, and now the designer returns to take over the brand’s helm.
Rider will oversee all creative aspects of the Maison, from women’s and menswear to couture, accessories, and handbags.

I think this is the best decision. Celine has gone in a direction that is tonally weird to me. I think he can bring it back.

Loved Hedi Slimane’s designs during his time at Dior Homme.
Personally, I think he truly revived YSL and Celine (though not exactly my cup of tea). That said, I was a bit disappointed with the new Celine flagship back then, as it felt too similar to YSL—just swapping silver accents for gold.
I have loved the vision under the departing CD and can see why sales were so high. Will be interesting to see how the brand evolves with his successor.
I feel like Celine has gone from strength to strength. I loved the Phoebe era and I also enjoyed the Hedi era. I’m excited for this!
